It'll be nice to be done with the 2-class stuff next year.

Gen2's will still be running next year mixed in the Gen3 group. Fast Gen2's will still end up contending with back-marker Gen3's (and vice versa)...

But if we're gridded as one class, a fast Gen2 will not be gridded behind a slower Gen3.

The cars were grided as one class at the Sprints.

The issue is more differences in car characteristics. Because the GEN2 is heavier than a GEN3, the GEN2 generates heat in the tires more quickly and gets up to speed more quickly. Some of the GEN3's that you saw being passed with ease at the start of the race were able to re-pass after a few laps when their tires came up to temp.

Of course, the drivers at the front of the GEN2 field are also more experienced/comfortable with driving their cars near the limit than the drivers at the back of the GEN3 field, magnifying the differences in the rates that the two cars come up to temp/speed.
