Being on the East Coast you don't hear much about this event. SRF allowed ? Anybody ever race in the 25 Hour ? Enterprises would for a lot of us to run 25 hours.

Quick report after the 6:

Top 4 ESRs (two Normas, two SRF's), all driven by SRF drivers. Steve Fogg, Steve Zadig & Jim Devenport, Ed Railton & Mike Smith, Lee Douglas & Mike Boyle!

My 27 y.o. SRF has raced 750 miles in this event and the previous one...

I've raced the event twice in an SRF (mostly one, anyway). After the first time, I'd swear I'd never do it again (don't want to know what racing with bad headlights, and blind hills and corners can do to the inside of your helmet), but we made it the distance.

Enough years passed that I did it again, this time is a lightly modified CSR Performance SRF (bodywork, fuel cell, Toyo's), with proper lighting. Although we broke at 16 hours, we did enough distance to win the ESR class as the "big boys" (Norma's, Radicals, etc.) all broke, along with the other SRFs. Much better experience 2nd time around, although next time I'm chipping in for more crew to help out so there's more downtime between 2 hour stints with 4 drivers.

Should add that it's quite interesting as there's a mix of some really serious stuff (guys with dozens of 24 hours of Daytona patches) and big names (remember one of your team handing the camera over to Mimo Gidley to take our pictures.) It's gotten even bigger on the "pro" side, and attracts the car magazine crowd as well. LeAnne Rhimes did the national anthem the first time I ran, and the military jet flyovers makes this slightly different than your typical SCCA weekend (never mind 82 cars on a 3 mile track!)

Gotta stay ahead of Bob on posts!

One of the reasons we ran the 6 was we didn't want to mess around in the dark. Qualifying was right after dark, but the race ended in dusk.

Mark made a light bar based on my memory of the one we used when I crewed for MSR a few years ago. Being in the "ESR" class, we had to use yellow lens tape on them, which was too dark. But our objective was to check it out, finish, and maybe run some more enduros and maybe step up to the 25.

Probably not with an SRF, tho, since the ESR class is pretty much unlimited $. But I have some ideas for cars that might work for around the same cost as modifying an SRF.

You are brave men to race an SRF in the 25 Hours. While the Spec Racer has a great safety record, I would imagine a lot of that has to do with the fact that a vast majority of the time they are being raced against field of identical cars. Taking one out into a mixed class event like the 25 Hours must increase the risk considerably. I would not want to get t-boned by a GT3 Cup Car!

That is a very good point. That is one reason we only ran the 6 hours. Besides the dark, there are a lot of novelty drivers out there in some pretty aggressive equipment. There were two roll-overs on Friday.

Both the SRFs were driven by pretty seriously careful drivers.

I would be very interested in any ideas or comments anyone has to increase the entries in our annual San Francisco Region 4-hour RDC Enduro. Right now, it is tandemed with the last Regional (a double points single) of the Season; participation is not good, it looses money, and generating some excitement for it is a current hot topic in the Region.

6- hour? Driver Format? Class structure? Re-fueling rules changes? Anything....think outside the box...anything!

Why didn't you race in it, Tony? As long as you are loose with the money, you are going to lose it, too!

Seriously, we run it every year and it was what generated interest in running the 6 with NASA. Understand the region is discussing what to do with the weird amounts of remainder time that we seem to end up with in any event format.

Maybe if we had a couple two-hour (long-enough to require a driver change and fueling) enduros during the year, it would get people used to doing the extra prep (and crew equipment) required to do fuel stops.

"Back in the Day" the other thing that helped the Enduro was it was run in conjunction with the PCRRC at Infineon, which drew a lot more drivers from out of region. Also one year we had a two-hour "open top" Enduro for formula cars and sports racers in addition to the normal four-hour (and we ran in both! :) ).

I think the RDC needs to do a better job of promoting it (and the group itself). That has been happening in the past couple years, after many years of a couple people doing 90% of the work.
