With all the challenges/cost of road racing, it brought me back to my first years in Spec Racer / Sports Renault in SoCal, where they decided to do some oval racers. Seems like an opportunity to expand racing opportunities. Curious if others have run ovals, and get their perspective.
In my first year in an SR in 1993, Cal Club added three ovals to the calendar (called the "Three Ring Circuit), the Phoenix 1-mile track, a mini-oval (shaped line Indy) in Las Vegas, and the high banked oval in Mesa Marin (sadly, no longer operating). It hold a special place for me, as the Phoenix Oval race was my only win my first year of racing, to be repeated the following year. Thought for a bit that I'd have to give up road racing, and get a NASCAR license, instead! Fortunately, in my 3rd year I made my way to NorCal, with a bit more success on the tracks like Sears Point, and Laguna Seca.
Anyway, I'm curious if other Regions do or have done oval racing, and thoughts on looking at doing more of this, given the limited track availability and costs associated with road racing today.
Food for thought and appreciate any feedback on the idea...
