Ouch!

At the driver/ team rep meeting just before this year's 13 hr enduro in late Oct. a significant amount of time was spent emphasizing the point that a " 3 strike" rule was in effect for going 2 over the curbing and that this penalty WOULD be enforced. So this comes as no surprise. Looks dangerous to me, but I have only seen pictures- no " up close and personal" encounter. Anyone have any experience with this type of curbing addition? Julian Busby

The new curbing is similar to the curbing you find driver's left under the bridge at Road Atlanta (between turns 11 and 12), and the last turn coming onto the front straight at CMP. I'm sure there are other examples out there as well.

It looks similar to the curbing at Road America on the exit of turns 1, 5 and 12. The same sort of curbing was also installed on the exit of turns 1 and 7 at Blackhawk Farms after the close of the 2011 season.
Interesting that it appears to be being used as apex curbing at VIR. |

Good point on apex vs trackout curbing. The curbs at Atlanta and Elkhart at track out will jar your teeth and can also vibrate the brake pads back into the calipers. Watch Denny's RunOffs video and you'll see lots of brake light flickers just before brake zones as drivers test their brake pedal. As apex curbing, it may not cause that much trouble since it will be the unloaded side of the car going over it.

Laguna Seca had that type of curbing. It was not something you wanted to use regularly. The Moto GP guys made them knock them down to the flat style curbs because of safety reasons.

The bikers using VIR are not happy with it.
SRFs are being encourged to go "around" that corner from now on, both by rules and curbs. Is this better then the verticle PVC pipes at Carolina Motorsports Park? |

The silly part about the bikers complaining is that this curbing is per FIM specs!
And as far as us four wheel guys go, it's our own fault for driving off course. If we could stay on the black stuff, tracks wouldn't have to resort to more aggressive curbing. Ken Grammer
