Had to replace a motor at the track last weekend at Watkins Glenn. At 10pm found the top center bolt for the header was stripped. Placed bolt, slightly more than finger tight. Ran ok for weekend. Plan for 2 more race weekends and runoffs before removing for Gen 3 conversion. What, if anything, should I do?

I saw someone use this stuff http://www.grainger.com/product/LOCTITE-Stripped-Thread-Repair-Kit-1YDZ5 (not on a header) and it seemed to work.

I used a product called heli coil with good results before. I believe Napa might sell them
It's better to be last on the grid at a race track, than have pole position at the Funeral Home.

Confirming Helicoils to solve the stripped threads (used them a lot in industry) but my concern is how to get a drill and its Helicoil drillbit behind your engine Lee. Maybe some creative extension from behind your seat. Good luck!

Thing is, you gotta insert that drill bit dead square perpendicular to the hole to make it work. This one is a toughie.

That's why I suggested the Loctite. You want to avoid screwing up the hole for the helicoil. Although I know people who have done it on alternator bracket bolts, w/o pulling the engine.

It says on the performance specs for Loctite Stripped Thread repair that it works up to 300 degrees, making it dicey in that application. Could be worth a try, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. John Hagerman had one which worked. The standard bolt is 25mm but the head will take a 30mm if a 1mm washer is used. Sure enough the last 4-5mm was just enough to tighten the bolt. Cost 50 cents. Time 5 min. THANK YOU JOHN. If the motor was out of the car,the hell coil would have been best.
