When manufacturing shafts with holes that see torque loads the holes should be reamed after drilling, on aircraft they are often honed after reaming. Any ridges left by a drill bit cause stress risers leading to the formation of cracks.

The process used to make our shafts probably has varied over the years.

Still not a very expensive but critical part worth considering replacing.
