Come on out the the West coast in February and you can get your permit in 3 days at Thunderhill in our SCCA school. Last year they even had a reasonably priced rental setup in a Spec Miata or SRF (should certainly be less than $4k) or there's a list of other rental options available.

San Francisco! I can already imagine how that conversation will go with my wife: "Honey, I'm going to San Francisco to get my race license." "Great, I can't wait. Since you'll be at the track all day, that will give me plenty of time to shop!" Any savings instantly go up in smoke!

This is Thunderhill, it's the casinos you have to watch out for...

Spousal risk factors:
Laguna: Shopping
Infineon: Wine
Thunderhill: Gambling

The racing is worth it, tho.

True, if you wife does some shopping, you might not save much, if any money. But just think how many kitchen passes you will earn for future race weekends. :D

Luckily, most of ours hang at the track.

You might look into Skip Barber or a school similar. I also read that some regions are conducting a drivers school in conjunction with the test day of a race weekend, specifically targeted to people with PDX, Solo, karting etc. background. I don't have any details, but someone else on here may know more.

That's a really good idea, I think they are talking about doing something like it out here.

One cool thing we have available is a private clinic pre or post SCCA school http://www.artofroadracing.com/AoRR/Home.html put on a month before. Several drivers are going back this year.
