Do all data collection vendors use the same CAN connector or do we have to mix and match the Gen3 connector on the harness to individual vendors? It's only 2 wires so it should not be a big deal if they aren't all the same, just wondering.

The CAN standard is a wiring standard, and I don't believe any connectors (other than the OBD port) have been specified.

In a stroke of brilliance, the Gen3 ECU connector supplied for dash/data systems is the same connector/pinout/protocol as the one provided by the Honda engine in Formula F.

That means we can offer a standard cable to allow connection to an AiM Evo4, Stack MFD or MFR. And custom harnesses can be made for CDS, MoTeC or Race Technology.

At Veracity Racing Data, we have a standard AiM Evo4 cable, but can also supply the connector with just wiring pigtails for your existing data system. Here are the details on the connector and pinout if you want to do this yourself:

Connector
TE Connectivity
Pin 770985-1 (22-26 AWG)
Housing 1445389-1

1 CAN High
2 CAN Low
3 12V
4 Ground ( 12V Less than 2 amp load)

The protocol is 1Mbit/s Bosch MS4.3 compatible. Many data systems can be configured for that baud rate and protocol.

Note the ECU does not have a CAN termination resistor, and this would normally be added at this connector.

Huh?
It's better to be last on the grid at a race track, than have pole position at the Funeral Home.

Looks like the pin number should be

571-794059-1 (30-26 AWG) or

571-770985-1 (26-22 AWG) or

571-770987-1 (22-18 AWG).

David, Do you know which it is?

I got my system from Dave & Ellen at Veracity. I highly recommend them if you need a system, wiring, etc. The support and service was great. They are also SCCA racers like us.

Sorry, those parts numbers were the suppliers part numbers. The TE Connectivity part numbers are:

Pin 770985-1 (22-26 AWG)
Housing 1445389-1

We have several AiM MXL2 systems on order. This issue is that these units will have a new internal architecture from previous AiM products. That means all new software and firmware -- but it still needs all the features and connectivity of the previous units. While they have them functional, they are not equivalent to the current generation products (ie. CAN expansion, custom sensors, etc). The USA AiM importer is holding off releasing the product until it's more complete.

They are delivering units in Europe, and from what I can tell, they are finding all the bugs we won't have to deal with.

MXL2 could be a great product for next season...

your welcome :)
It took a lot of lobbying to get all parties to agree to this obvious solution

Enterprises just sent me a connector and pins for the mating connector to the Gen3 harness, and I pinned it only for CAN+ and CAN- to the pigtail that came with the standard AiM Evo4 kit and it communicates just fine with the above-referenced Bosch protocol and pin assignments. No resistors or adaptors needed. I did not connect ground as it appears to be un-needed, and I did not want to create any ground loops (albeit only a digital signal so less important).

I gave up on MXL2. The Italian roll out of this product reminds me of way back when AiM promised GPS for the original MXL for what seemed like 2 years before it was really available. I may not have that many race seasons left in me.
