I'm with Clay on this..surprise, surprise. Post Sprints weight was 1705#, and I never start with a full tank. An additional 25# on the car would be good for me.

All in for a new weight limit that equalizes the class more. Coming in at 70-80lbs over minimum every time. :)

210 and heading back to 220 :cry:
At 210 pounds, we had to add ballast to the car to get to 1670+. Admittedly, this was on a dry tank, but even at a relatively heavy body weight, we had to add ballast.
The current weight of the class is more than adequate for 90%+/- of the population and I'd vote for the weight of the cars to come down commensurate with the weight savings of the new motor.
More horsepower + lighter weight should create a more significant performance gap versus Spec Miata and would hopefully bring more drivers back to the class.

At most tracks I can come in at 1690-1695 with a couple of gallons, and that's ok with me. If I were to get under 1685 or so I would get real nervous (like "a gust of wind and I'm illegal" nervous). That nervousness might be unwarranted (I know some who strive for 1670 on the nose) but it's how I roll.
Fortunately my love of all things culinary likely precludes my reaching the 1680 mark ;).

What Matt (mhart) may not know is that there is a bare chassis weight difference of some 30+/- pounds over the 28 years of building the chassis - there have been different jigs, etc. Having owned about 12 of these race cars since 1985 I have seen these differences. Also there are items mandated that added weight without changing the minimum - Hans, pans, etc. - the heavy guys had more weight to haul around and the lighter guys were able to pull more ballast off their cars. Based on the unofficial survey taken and votes cast a few years ago during the last great weight debate it is more like about 25% of the drivers are overweight enough to want weight added to the minimum - so the 90% number is not correct at this time. Again, I am advocating adding (actually deducting) 1/2 of the weight difference of the new proposed engine package or 25# which seems like a fair compromise to me and I think will get the number into the low 90% range.

1) Very aware of the variances in chassis weight
2) Think that we are comparing apples to oranges...90% percentile weight for a US male varies from 220 lbs to 243 lbs depending on age.

WOW. This sounds like a goverment discussion where a few special interest groups lobby to tax the rest of the population for their own personal gain! IF you have been paying attention you can see how that socialist approach has helped our economy!

This is simple really;

First, the info on the weights of the drivers is out there. Each driver has a physical at the SCCA with a weight on it. So talking about the average weight of the US male population is pointless. Look at the proper data set of active SRF drivers and use the real numbers.

Then decide on a reasonable percentile (60%? 75%?...90% is too high. Sorry Clay but I disagree) and do the calcualtions for a new min weight. QED

Once you have that, the light guys add weight, hit the pasta bar and have a beer while the heavy guys join weight watchers and hit the gym.

If I were lobbying for anything I would want a MAX weight for the car with a MIN weight as raced. I saw a car once with a driver who weighed about 170 but had NO weight plates in it! HOW does that happen?
It's better to be last on the grid at a race track, than have pole position at the Funeral Home.

If I follow this: 5'5" 180lbs, way over weight gets an advantage over someone 230 and not over weight,,

Being new and don't even know what my car weighs yet what does the avg car weigh,, range,, so far I only know my Nosie + Tail are 21Lbs over min.??
