Hi everyone, I just bought a Schroth Hans Harness and I was wondering how people keep the belts the correct width apart. Is there something you have to buy from Enterprise? Or is it something that gets welded on? If it was up to me I would weld something on to keep the two belts from sliding apart/together, but what's the official way...or am I missing something in the rules?

Also, what has everyone been seeing in terms of a Hans device angle for slimmer guys? 20 or 30 degrees?

I don't recall if your car has the shoulder belt ladder modification installed. http://www.midwestspecracer.com/beltladder.asp
If it does that does a good job of positioning the belts. Did you ever find a Butler seat? They have shoulder belt holes that help to keep the belt in the right place.

I think it does, but I will have to see.

No I haven't been able to find one yet. Not very common. Who would have thunk it? :roll:

I think the consensus on HANS is 30 degree for fiberglass seat and 20 for Butler seat.
If you don't use any ballast in your car and you have a butler seat, you may also need a 30 ;)

I wouldn't invest until you try one or both out while having someone take a picture of its vertical position between your helmet and headrest.

The back (flat) portion of the HANS should be parallel to the headrest when viewed from the side.
(straight up and down)

I am 5'8" / 150lbs and use a 30 in a fiberglass seat.

The only way I know to keep 2" Schroth belts from sliding off the HANS is force them together and keep them tight.

I was thinking about using a sternum-like strap behind my back to hold the belts together but haven't experimented with it yet.
The short answer is that the old (pre ladder bar) system, in my opinion, is not ideal for the HANS.

when i started using the HANS and read the info on keeping the belts aligned, I bought 4 split collars and put them on the horizontal tube that the belts wrapped around to keep them positioned. You can get them here, or Grainger, etc.:

Which HANS harness are you talking about.

The 3/2 or the 4 belt shoulder setup.

They are very different in install.

That split collar thing Steve Kramer mentioned is available right here in Topeka at IBT. (Industrial Bearing)

Trent,

I came across this site (http://www.na-motorsports.com/Discuss/s ... Seats.html) and few weeks ago and it addresses the exact issue you're talking about. If I remember correctly it makes reference to an Enterprises part that allows you to reduce the shoulder harness spacing to the recommended distance for HANS use.

Okay the 2" are way easier to install than the four belt setup.

Get the ladder setup.

It does a couple of things.

Makes it really easy to get the width right like you're trying.

It also has 3 levels so you can get the height correct.
