For what it's worth, I have 2-1/2 quarts of this stuff in the gearbox, and it's shifting faster and better than it's ever shifted.

I'm running Gen 3, original clutch and helical (not new straight-cut) gearset. Sure, the whole box might eat itself next time out, but it's so smoooooooooth.
Transmission fluid.

I thought we were supposed to run 3 quarts, no more, no less. Am I mistaken? I'd very much like to fix that before MARRS 1 if I am.

Fill until your level is to the middle of the speedometer gear. Some prefer to run a little less, but I prefer to have the safety margin in the event of a leak.

We used to run 2 QT. on the G2 so if you pulled out the axles there was no mess. Mr. D specifically recommended to me to run 3 Qts., due to the higher loads and more RPM the engine spins the gearbox with the G3.

I believe in following the advice of the guy who built the trans.

When I talked to the guys at Red Line Synthetic they recommended D4 ATF for the transmission.

Once you get a gearbox rebuilt with the new gears, you may want to talk w/ Nikki at Enterprises. I believe there was a specific fluid they were suggesting, but I'll defer to Nikki on further communications.

The explanation that made the most sense to me (from a trans rebuilder) was that the transmission was used in Fords and Mazdas. Ford spec'd an ATF because it was better in cold weather. Mazda spec'd a manual trans lube. So when used in the SRF, they went with the Ford recommendation. If it was SRMazda, we'd probably all be using gear lube.
It's a non-exotic, non-LSD, synchro street gearbox. I think it's multiple choice question, and all answers are acceptable. |
